Guatemala, Finca El Durazno
Finca El Durazno, located in Santa Rosa, Guatemala, is home to 20 dedicated coffee producers who uphold a century-old tradition of coffee cultivation. This region is renowned for its fertile soils and high altitudes, making it ideal for specialty coffee.
The Castillo family has been central to this coffee legacy since Don Cirilo Castillo began the tradition in 1893. Today, Emanuel Castillo leads the effort through the Cosechando Esperanza (‘Harvesting Hope”) program, which supports smallholder growers.
While coffee from this area is traditionally processed using the washed method, recent experiments with natural and honey processing methods have introduced exciting new flavour profiles.
Sustainability and social responsibility are key priorities for these producers. They implement a five-year farm management plan through the Harvesting Hope Program, which includes environmental education, waste reduction, and training in financial literacy and sustainable practices to empower local families.
